The Section

Vermont’s Green Mountain Club is the caretaker of the Long Trail.  The 272 mile footpath, 185 miles of side trails, and 70 backcountry shelters that make up the Long Trail is broken up into 14 sections.  Each section has adopters and volunteers who maintain the trails as well as the shelters.  The Laraway Section has a total of 21.3 miles of the Long Trail plus 3.9 miles of side trails including three overnight shelters.  This beautiful stretch passes outstanding features such as Prospect Rock, Codding Hollow, Laraway Lookout, Ritterbush Lookout, Devil's Perch, and Devil's Gulch.

The Green Mountain Club has several guide books and maps with detailed hiking and trail information.  For more information on books or about the Green Mountain Club, please go to

Who We Are

At the present time we have 56 members from various parts of northern Vermont, Canada and four other states, and all sections and shelters have been adopted.  The adopters along with a dedicated group of volunteers help keep the trails clear and shelters maintained.   More information about volunteering to help maintain the section can be found on the OUTINGS & WORK TRIPS tab.  All are welcome!

Our History

Formerly the St. Albans Section, the Laraway Section was officially granted a full charter by the Green Mountain Club trustees on September 27, 1975 with a membership of 42.  In October-November of 1975 the St. Albans Section adopted the section of the Long Trail from Vermont Route 15 (Johnson) to Vermont Route 118 (Eden/Belvidere) which we still maintain today.  At the 1988 Annual Meeting the Section voted to change the name to the Laraway Section to put more focus on the trail.
